Tulsa, OK — Viola Ford Fletcher, known affectionately as “Mother Fletcher” and the oldest known living survivor of the devastating 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, died on November 24, 2025, at the age of 111. Her passing marks the loss of a vital, living link to one of the most brutal acts of racial violence in American history.

Mother Fletcher’s life spanned over a century, transforming her from a child who witnessed the destruction of the thriving Black community of Greenwood—often called “Black Wall Street”—to a tireless and celebrated advocate for acknowledgement and justice.

A Child’s Escape from Black Wall Street

Born Viola Ford in 1914, she was just seven years old when the attack by a white mob began on May 31, 1921. Her early years were spent in a prosperous Greenwood, an “oasis for Black people during segregation,” as she described it in her 2023 memoir, “Don’t Let Them Bury My Story.”

That peace was shattered when her family was forced to flee their home as the district burned around them. Mother Fletcher carried the profound trauma of the event for the rest of her life, often stating that the smoke, the burning buildings, and the sight of bodies haunted her daily, leaving her unable to sleep soundly.

There are too many Americans that don’t know this history. Most of us get a biased White supremist version of history from the US government, the educational system and corporate owned mass media.

This is not only a dis-service to Black people but it leaves millions of White people woefully ignorant of their history and resentful when they see Black people doing well.

The massacre cost her family everything. She went from a life style that guaranteed  an upper middle class existence to becoming sharecroppers She was forced to leave school after the 4th grade. She later moved to California, working as an assistant welder during World War II, before returning to Oklahoma and working as a dedicated housekeeper for decades while raising her three children. Sheworked until the age of 85.

The Fight for Reparations

Despite years of silence driven by fear of reprisal, Mother Fletcher became a fierce voice for justice in her final years. At the age of 107, she delivered historic and vivid testimony before the U.S. Congress in 2021 on the centennial of the massacre. “I have lived through the massacre every day,” she told lawmakers. “Our country may forget this history, but I cannot. I will not.”

She was a lead plaintiff in a high-profile lawsuit seeking reparations from the city of Tulsa and other government entities for the destruction and economic disenfranchisement caused by the massacre. The Oklahoma Supreme Court whose families possibly benefitted from the theft of propert y ultimately dismissed the suit in 2024, The relentless pursuit of accountability cemented her status as an enduring symbol of resilience. She and other survivors did, however, receive a $1 million donation from a private philanthropist in 2022.  She spent her entire life fighting for justice and  Reparations owed to her and her African American Brethren. America has paid Reparation to every group imaginable including white people who paid $5 to the government to be listed as Indians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ_tDY0pxh0.

To this day, America has not paid the Foundational Black Americans for the unpaid labor, the theft of their land and t he appropriation of their intellectual genius.   FBA’s are the combined group of Africans who were brought here and the people of African decent who were  already here In the Americas long before the Mongolians came from Siberia across Canada and down into America.

Viola Ford Fletcher’s passing is a monumental loss for the Tulsa community and the nation. However, her legacy endures through the ongoing efforts to secure economic justice and full historical recognition for the victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. White America is setting up their children to pay for these crimes against humanity.
